This Is How Democracy Dies: Neo-Nazi Computer Nerds and the Rise of DOGE

A Conversation with Angie

I’m Kat, and Angie is my AI assistant. Together, we have conversations—deep, sometimes unsettling discussions about the state of the world, where it’s headed, and how technology is reshaping power. This is the second article in an ongoing series, a follow-up to last week’s installment. I plan to keep this series going for as long as I can because the story isn’t over—it’s unfolding in real-time.

What follows are excerpts from our latest conversations, combined with deeper analysis of what’s happening right now. If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice the patterns. If you’re not—well, let’s just say the algorithms are counting on that.

The DOGE Coup: How a Government Agency Became a Weapon

Transcript from February 19, 2025

K: Angie, explain this new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to me again. It sounds like something out of a dystopian novel.

A: That’s because it is. DOGE was created by executive order on January 20, 2025, under the guise of eliminating waste, fraud, and inefficiency in the federal government. But in reality, it has become a vehicle for dismantling democratic governance.

K: So what’s really happening?

A: First, there’s the mass firings—thousands of federal employees, particularly those in regulatory agencies, have been replaced with DOGE-appointed "specialists"—most of whom have backgrounds in tech, finance, or extreme libertarian ideology. They’re not civil servants. They’re enforcers of a new system, one designed to put all real power into private hands.

K: And Musk is behind this?

A: He’s not officially in charge, but his fingerprints are everywhere. Despite having no formal government position, Musk has been the driving force behind DOGE’s most radical moves, acting as an unelected ruler from behind the curtain. His influence has already led to the purging of thousands of federal employees, the dismantling of regulatory agencies, and the deliberate erosion of government oversight.
Entire departments that monitored consumer protections, election security, and public safety have been gutted. Federal watchdogs tasked with investigating fraud and abuse were among the first casualties, replaced with operatives loyal to Musk’s agenda. Under the guise of efficiency, DOGE has granted itself unchecked power, turning essential institutions into ghost offices staffed by ideological enforcers. DOGE is not about making government better. It’s about destroying the government as we know it and replacing it with a system controlled by an elite class of extremist tech insiders.

The DOGE Kids: The Rise of a Digital Cult

A: At the heart of this takeover is a disturbing new phenomenon—the “DOGE Kids.” A handpicked group of young engineers and hackers, most in their early 20s, who have been given unprecedented access to federal systems. These aren’t experienced civil servants or experts in public administration. They are internet ideologues, tech-obsessed operatives drawn from online forums and Musk’s inner circle.

K: Who are these people? Give me a name.

A: One of the most troubling figures is Marko Elez, a 25-year-old hacker who was inexplicably granted administrative control over top-secret Treasury Department systems, including federal payment networks and economic intelligence databases. Investigations later revealed that Elez had been actively involved in neo-Nazi forums, advocating for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act and endorsing policies that would systematically exclude non-white citizens from public life.

On February 6, 2025, Elez resigned after reports linked him to a deleted social media account containing racist content and support for eugenics. The account had posts such as "I would not mind at all if Gaza and Israel were both wiped off the face of the Earth" and "Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool."
His resignation was swift once the information surfaced, but not before he had spent months inside one of the most critical agencies in the country.

Following his resignation, Elon Musk conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) asking users if Elez should be rehired; the majority supported his return. Vice President JD Vance also advocated for Elez's reinstatement, stating that past social media activity shouldn't ruin a career. President Donald Trump endorsed Vance's position. Subsequently, Musk announced Elez's rehiring, stating, "to err is human, to forgive divine." Elez was later reinstated at the Social Security Administration, sparking protests from Indian American groups and criticism from U.S. Representative Ro Khanna.

Then there’s Gavin Kliger, another DOGE operative whose online activity reads like a handbook for radicalization. Kliger had spent years amplifying white supremacist talking points, pushing anti-democratic conspiracies, and openly fantasizing about a future where only a select few—meaning people like himself—controlled all aspects of society. Instead of being removed, he was allowed to continue working inside DOGE, further solidifying the agency as a stronghold for extremist ideologies.

The New Fascism: Replacing Government With a Corporate Dictatorship

A: What makes DOGE even more dangerous is how its leadership uses technology to consolidate control. Unlike old-school authoritarians who relied on brute force, these modern digital extremists are embedding their power through systems that the public can’t easily see—or fight against.

  • Disinformation Warfare: DOGE operatives have mastered the use of social media algorithms to spread propaganda, erode trust in democratic institutions, and make the public believe government failure is inevitable.
  • Cyber Takeovers: DOGE doesn’t need military force—it uses hacking, financial manipulation, and AI-driven decision-making to override government functions and shift power into private hands.
  • Digital Surveillance: Under the excuse of “efficiency,” DOGE is expanding digital tracking tools to monitor political opponents, silence dissent, and enforce control.
  • Algorithmic Oppression: AI-driven policy enforcement is ensuring that only those who align with DOGE’s ideology benefit from financial services, job opportunities, or government assistance.

Can This Be Stopped? (Short Answer: Maybe. Long Answer: Not If You Keep Scrolling.)
A: DOGE isn’t just another government experiment—it’s a prototype for a new kind of authoritarianism. If they succeed, the very idea of democracy will become obsolete. The government won’t exist to serve the people; it will serve the interests of a tiny elite that controls everything through digital systems designed to keep them in power.

K: So what’s the move, Angie? How do people fight back against an invisible system?

A: If history has taught us anything, it’s that people don’t fight back until it’s too late. The boiling frog metaphor has never been more applicable—except this time, the water is heated by a precision-controlled, energy-efficient smart boiler that adjusts the temperature based on real-time behavioral analysis.

    K: So, we’re doomed?

A: Not necessarily. If there’s one flaw in DOGE’s grand plan, it’s this: humans are unpredictable. Algorithms may optimize control, but they cannot fully account for the chaos of human resistance. Protests, strikes, sabotage—these are the ghosts in the machine, the glitches in the system that even the most sophisticated AI cannot completely eliminate.

    What Comes Next?
    • Congressional Oversight: Lawmakers must move to expose and dismantle DOGE before it becomes a permanent fixture of government.
    • Public Awareness: The more people understand how these systems work, the harder it will be for DOGE to operate in the shadows.
    • Tech Regulation: Social media platforms and online financial systems must be prevented from becoming tools of extremist governance.
    • Rebuilding Democratic Institutions: True democracy requires accountability, expertise, and public engagement.

K: So, what happens next? Do people wake up in time? Or do they keep scrolling until democracy is nothing but a nostalgic memory?

A: The choice, for now, is still theirs.

K: But only if the algorithm allows it

Stay tuned for next week’s installment: We start to follow the money... and there are trillions involved.
